Sunday, August 28 at 9:00 PM ET/PT on MTV
The "MTV Video Music Awards" will bestow Rihanna with its highest honor, the "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award," for her decade-long impact on music, pop culture, fashion, film and philanthropy. Rihanna will perform during the ceremony LIVE from New York's iconic Madison Square Garden on Sunday, August 28 at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
Two-time VMA "Video of the Year" winner and the youngest solo artist to score 14 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100—the fastest to do so, Rihanna's unparalleled output of hits have spawned some of today's most memorable music videos from "Umbrella" to "We Found Love," "Diamonds" and her most recent collaboration with Drake on "Work." With this honor, Rihanna joins the prestigious list of past Vanguard recipients including Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Guns N' Roses, Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, BEYONCÉ and Kanye West.
It is hard to believe that Rihanna is only 28 years old, yet within the 10 years since the start of her musical career, she's sold more than 61 million albums and 215 million tracks worldwide. Rihanna is the "Best Selling Digital Artist of All Time… with more than 100 million [RIAA] Gold & Platinum song certifications" and an eight-time Grammy Award winner who also counts 14 Billboard Music Awards among other countless music accolades. Aside from her musical achievements, Rihanna is bona fide business woman with multiple entrepreneurial ventures. However, most importantly, her undeniable cultural influence has forever imprinted her in history as a Global Icon despite her young age.
With over 81 million Facebook fans, 64 million Twitter and 42 million Instagram followers, Rihanna is putting her influence to good use via additional philanthropic efforts. Chief among these is her own Clara Lionel Foundation. Established in 2012 and named after Rihanna's beloved grandparents Clara and Lionel Braithwaite, the foundation works to improve the quality of life for communities globally in the areas of health, Education, arts and Culture.

MTV announced today via its various social media platforms that megastar Kanye West is set to perform on the "2013 MTV Video Music Awards” stage LIVE from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on August 25 at 9:00pm ET/PT. Following his performance of "BLKKK SKKKN HEAD," Kanye will triumphantly enter the history books by tying Madonna as the artist with the most VMA performances. Both artists have notched performances at seven separate VMAs. In celebration of the forthcoming performance and feat, MTV Jams, MTV’s 24-hour hip-hop music channel and MTV Hits, MTV's 24-hour music channel, will feature an hour block of Kanye West videos and performances from 4-5pm ET/PT. Partnering With Non-Profit Architecture for Humanity, MTV Will Air the One Hour Special Featuring Members of the “Jersey Shore” Cast As Well As Other Special Guests
As part of the effort to help rebuild and restore the Jersey Shore – which was devastated, along with many other coastal areas, by Hurricane Sandy last week - MTV (a division of Viacom Inc., NASDAQ: VIAB) today announced it will produce a one hour fundraising special called “Restore the Shore.” The special will encourage people nationwide to contribute to the rebuilding of Seaside Heights, the heart of the Jersey Shore and home to one of MTV’s most popular shows, “Jersey Shore.”
The special will run LIVE from MTV’s Times Square Studio on Thursday, November 15th at 11pm ET, tape delayed PT on air, online and on mobile and will feature the cast of the “Jersey Shore” along with other special guest appearances to be announced. For this fundraising effort, MTV is partnering with Architecture for Humanity, an internationally recognized non-profit organization that provides design and construction services to communities in need. The organization will create a “Restore the Shore” fund to collect donations that will be principally directed toward the rebuilding of the famed Seaside Heights boardwalk, as well as supporting the re-building efforts of businesses and residents in the community that were so tragically affected by this historic storm. Architecture for Humanity has been helping communities rebuild after natural disasters for more than a decade, including major efforts in Biloxi and New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and in Haiti after the devastating earthquake in 2010. Viewers will be provided with easy-to-use online and mobile giving tools, so people can donate during and well after the MTV special runs on November 15th. Kevin Hart isn’t just the host of next month’s MTV Video Music Awards, he’s also part of Hollywood’s hottest new couple.
The comedian stars alongside Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in a video posted Wednesday on MTV’s website. Hart tells the pair he’s hosting the VMA show and that paparazzi are trying to get a look at ‘‘the new ‘it’ couple,’’ even though they would actually be a trio. He says, ‘‘I'm talking about Kev-Ye-Kim.’’
The video shows a casually clad Kardashian and West, who is up for two Video Music Awards, lounging on the end of a bed. When West asks what Hart means, he offers other possible couple nicknames, including ‘‘Ye-Kev-Kim’’ and ‘‘Ye-Kim-Kev.’’
The MTV Video Music Awards will be presented Sept. 6th at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
MTV Video Music Awards 2012 To Take Over Staples Center
MTV Video Music Awards are moving to the home of the Lakers: Staples Center in Los Angeles
Thursday, September 6th, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, the 2012 VMAs will take over Staples for the first time. The epicenter of the L.A. sports and entertainment universe is just the latest iconic venue the VMAs have called home, joining a list that includes New York's Radio City Music Hall, the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and American Airlines Arena in Miami.
It's fitting the 2012 VMAs are moving to Staples; after all, they'll need a big house to match the big-time impact of last year's show, which scored MTV's biggest audience in the network's history with a record-breaking 12.4 million viewers and were also the most tweeted-about awards show ever.
But before you get too excited for the VMAs, don't forget the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, airing live Sunday, June 3, from Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. Russell Brand — a two-time VMA host — has been tapped to helm this year's Movie Awards.
MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS 2012 WINNERS: The Complete List! | WATCH VMA VIDEO, PHOTO'S HERE
The “2012 MTV Video Music Awards,” broadcast live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, the show was a night of musical firsts with the debut TV performances of new songs by Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, P!nk, Green Day and more. First-time host Kevin Hart set the lively tone for the evening the moment he emerged with his own unique security detail, while One Direction, Frank Ocean, 2 Chainz and Calvin Harris marked their first-ever VMA performances.
Rihanna, who took home the biggest prize of the night, “Video of the Year,” for “We Found Love,” opened the show with a sultry performance of “Cockiness (Love It)” featuring A$AP Rocky.” She then turned the arena into a huge dance party, performing her VMA award-winning song, “We Found Love,” with mega-hit producer and “2012 VMA house D.J.” Calvin Harris, who won a VMA of his own for “Best Electronic Dance Music Video.”
Chris Brown won two VMA Moonmen for “Best Male Video” and “Best Choreography” for “Turn up the Music.” Tying Brown with two wins for the night was M.I.A., who took home “Best Direction” and “Best Cinematography” for “Bad Girls.” The Young Money crew also had a night of successes, as Nicki Minaj won “Best Female Video,” and Drake featuring Lil Wayne scored “Best Hip Hop Video.” Coldplay garnered “Best Rock Video,” and VMA pre-show performer Demi Lovato took home “Best Video with a Message.”
A gravity-defying P!nk got the party started from a flying trapeze, performing her chart-topping hit “Blow Me (One Last Kiss).” Rising R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean took the stage for an intimate performance of his single “Thinking Of You,” off his debut album. A powerful thunderstorm rumbled into downtown Chicago on Saturday, forcing organizers to suspend the Lollapalooza music festival for more than two hours while the tens of thousands of concertgoers took shelter in parking garages.
The festivities were halted at 3:30 p.m. after the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning because of a line of storms that was barreling down on the city from the west.
Organizers said it was unfortunate, but that safety was paramount. The estimated 100,000 concertgoers took the evacuation order in stride, for the most part, and calmly left Grant Park for nearby underground garages that were designated evacuation centers for the sold-out three-day event, which ends Sunday.
Crowds were allowed back into the venue after the worst of the storm had passed and police and concert organizers had inspected the park for any damage. It was only last summer that storm-driven wind gusts knocked down heavy stage rigging at the state fair in neighboring Indiana, killing seven people and injuring dozens of others.
Organizers posted a reshuffled Saturday lineup that added a half-hour to the night's events, which were scheduled to culminate with the Red Hot Chili Peppers performing on the main stage.
